Melbourne City superstar Tim Cahill is set to return from injury in the A-League just days after being left out of the Socceroos squad.

Cahill missed City's win over Adelaide United with an Achilles complaint, but coach John van 't Schip confirmed he would come into the squad to face Brisbane on Friday night.

National coach Ange Postecoglou left the 36-year-old out of the Socceroos squad to face Thailand in Bangkok so he can return to peak fitness with City.

Cahill has endured an interrupted start to his tenure as City's marquee man and van 't Schip is pleased his star striker is staying at home.

"He needs more consistent training and playing - I think that's the reason that Ange gave and I think it's good because Tim, like every player, needs consistency," van 't Schip said on Thursday.

"Hopefully he can get a run of games.

"(Ange) wants Tim to prepare and make sure that he plays games, gets into a rhythm, because his rhythm has been a bit broken."

Postecoglou wasn't willing to include the ageing star given he will put his squad through a searching 10-day camp before they take on Thailand.

But Cahill isn't concerned the move might signal the start of the end of his international career.

"He told me he had a good talk with Ange and it was nothing to worry about," van 't Schip said.

"He's focused on playing games (with City) and getting into game fitness then all the other things will takes care of themselves.

"I think he can get a solid run at it, he takes good care of his body, but we have also said from the start that we have to manage players and Tim is a player that we have to manage.

"It's nothing very different but because of his age you sometimes have to take that a bit more into consideration with what you're doing with a player."

Melbourne City are second on the A-League table with three wins from four starts.

Ivan Franjic and Michael Jakobsen were also included in the squad, but van 'Schip said star Argentinian midfielder Nicolas Colazo is at least two weeks away after having a perforated ear drum surgically repaired.
