City tinkering with A-League tactics

With the luxury of an eight-day break, Melbourne City have beavered away on their attacking formation with the hope of claiming a first interstate A-League win this season.

City's amorphous 3-2-4-1 formation has taken the competition by storm, delivering four wins and placing John van 't Schip's men second on the table.

The all-out attacking approach is a continuation of the Dutchman's free-scoring coaching style which delivered City a swag of goalscoring records last season.

But it didn't deliver the club a first piece of silverware, so there's work to be done.

In particular, there's work to do on the road.

In two trips so far this season, City were lucky 1-0 winners over a depleted Wellington Phoenix and 1-0 losers to Brisbane Roar a fortnight ago.

Ahead of Friday night's trip to Spotless Stadium to face Western Sydney, winger Bruce Kamau said the club was focusing on the little things that could increase their away-day returns.

"A lot of teams have seen us play, the way we like to play high," he said.

"Teams are now sitting in and waiting to hit us on the counter-attack and it's more about us dealing with that and learning how to play against that.

"Each game we definitely improve at it.

"We're only going to improve as the season goes on."

Kamau has started every league match for the club this season but is yet to find the net for his new club.

His last A-League goal came against the Wanderers in Adelaide's 3-1 grand final success.

"Every player wants to score," he said.

"That's what I've been missing but it will definitely come. I think once the first one goes in they will continue."

The 21-year-old attacker confirmed Argentinian winger Nicolas Colazo was close to a return after suffering a perforated ear drum.

"He's back in training with the boys so hopefully he'll be out there as soon as possible," he said.
