Clive Palmer is set to field questions about the collapse of Queensland Nickel, as liquidators grill key players of the doomed business in the Federal Court.

Mr Palmer is expected to start giving evidence at a public examination in Brisbane on Friday morning.

Special purpose liquidators are questioning key players related to Queensland Nickel about how the company was managed before it collapsed earlier this year, with the loss of almost 800 jobs.

The court has so far heard from former chief financial officer Daren Wolfe and former managing director of operations Ian Ferguson.

In his evidence, Mr Ferguson said he started working at the now-mothballed refinery in March 2012 as a commercial director, at Mr Palmer's request, and was made general manager within weeks.

But for his first year he didn't understand the refinery's corporate structure, or how the plant "actually operated", he said.

The examinations will continue before Registrar Murray Belcher.
