The Human Rights Commission has accepted a complaint under race hate laws by a crossbench senator who was not impressed at being labelled an "angry white male".

Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm says he's received notification from the commission his case against Fairfax Media journalist Mark Kenny can now move to the conciliation stage.

"I don't need an apology or flowers from Mr Kenny, merely an acknowledgment that the article was unlawful. If Mr Kenny fails to do this, then I will look at my options," Senator Leyonhjelm, who wants to repeal a contentious section of racial discrimination laws, said on Tuesday.
