Ash eruptions from Costa Rica's Turrialba volcano have forced the cancellation of dozens of commercial flights, according to media reports.

More than 30 flights were cancelled over concerns about airborne ash from the 3,340 metre volcano, located just 60km northeast of the capital San Jose, the daily La Nacion reported.

Turrialba began erupting on Tuesday, dusting San Jose and other cities in central Costa Rica, as well as the Juan Santamaria International Airport, with a fine layer of ash.

The volcano is a popular tourist attraction. After more than a century lying dormant, it reawoke six years ago, and has since subjected Costa Rica to periodic eruptions.
