A crane has been used to rescue a man who fell about 10 metres into a gap between two buildings in inner city.

It's not known how long the 19-year-old was waiting for help after a neighbour spotted him in between the apartment block buildings in Darlinghurst on Monday afternoon.

Police say a crane was used to rescue the man because of the small space between the two walls, and he was taken to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with serious head and leg injuries.
