An elderly man pushing a child in a stroller has died after being hit by a car as he crossed a Melbourne road.

The 66-year-old was hit by a turning car on Springfield Road at the intersection of Springvale Road in Nunawading about 4.50pm on Wednesday.

The man, from Nunawading, died in hospital.

The boy, also from Nunawading, was hospitalised with minor injuries.

A 40-year-old Doncaster East woman driving the car remained at the scene where she spoke to police and was released pending further inquiries.

The crash takes Victoria's road toll to 265, compared to 231 deaths at the same time last year.
