Adelaide fitness coach and two-time leading goalkicker Brett Burton has been promoted to head of football.

Burton has overseen Adelaide's fitness, strength and conditioning program for the last 12 months, with the Crows enjoying one of the lowest injury counts in the AFL this season.

He replaces David Noble, who has joined Brisbane as their football boss and is considered likely to eventually become the Lions' chief executive.

"Brett has an incredible work ethic, outstanding communication skills and a thorough understanding of the industry from a playing, high performance and administrative perspective," Crows chief Andrew Fagan said on Wednesday.

"We worked our way through a long and talented list of prospective candidates from across the AFL and beyond, and quite simply Brett presented himself as a compelling option for the role.

"He is widely regarded as having the attributes to be one of the industry's leading football administrators."

Burton played 177 games during 12 seasons with the Crows and was renowned for his high-flying marks and goal sense, finishing his career with 265 majors.
