A 1977 painting titled Untitled XXV by the Dutch-American abstract expressionist Willem de Kooning has sold for a new auction record of his work, fetching $US66.3 million ($A87.9 million) in New York City.

It was auctioned in 2006 for $US27.1 million, setting a record at the time as the most expensive post-war and contemporary painting.

The painting is inspired by the landscapes reflected in the water in Long Island, New York, where the artist lived.
