The ex-wife of a man fatally stabbed in a Melbourne unit will be seen by a psychiatric nurse after fronting court charged with murder.

Renee Louise Nolan, 69, did not apply for bail when she appeared briefly in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday charged with murdering Harold Nolan.

Mr Nolan's body was found by police in a bed at his Mitcham unit on Monday.

Police say emergency services were alerted by his ex-wife.

Nolan barely whispered "yes" when asked whether she understood the court process on Tuesday.

A legal aid lawyer said it was Nolan's first time in custody and asked that she be seen by a psychiatric nurse.

Police will lodge items for forensic analysis before Nolan returns to court on February 28.
