A fiery debate over the Baird government's controversial bill to end greyhound racing in NSW has been launched in state parliament.

"Well the premier's not the only person in pain today," Opposition Leader Luke Foley declared as the debate kicked off on Tuesday afternoon, referring to Premier Baird's notorious back injury at the weekend.

"In fact, with this legislation he's breaking the hearts of thousands of good men and women across this state."
