Australian special forces and infantry are to be equipped with the most advanced night vision equipment available.

Defence Minister Marise Payne says deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq had proven the importance of fighting effectively at night and the new equipment would ensure the Australian Defence Force retained a critical advantage.

Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne said under contracts worth $307 million with Australian firm L-3 Oceania, state- of-the-art night vision goggles, helmet mounts, head harnesses and laser-aiming devices would be acquired.
