The Department of Finance has created a "huge efficiency' by moving most of its staff into one building in Canberra, but it has come at a cost.

A Senate hearing was told moving staff, files and equipment from five different tenancies around Canberra cost $220,000.

"The good news with the move is that we now have more than 85 per cent of Canberra staff in one place, which for us is a huge efficiency," acting Finance secretary Rosemary Huxtable told the hearing on Tuesday.

She said not only are there the benefits of people being together in a single organisation, importantly there were efficiency gains from people no longer having to travel between buildings for meetings.

Total efficiencies from the move are estimated at $55 million over the next 20 years.
