The homicide squad has taken over the case of a man who died after suffering serious burns in a suspicious Bendigo fire.

The 45-year-old Sailors Gully man was airlifted to a Melbourne hospital with life-threatening injuries on Sunday night but later died in the hospital, Victoria Police said in a statement on Tuesday.

A woman and two children who were also at the Long Gully property at the time of the blaze were uninjured.

A neighbour told News Corp they heard a loud bang on Sunday night before hearing an ambulance and fire truck arrive.

"The exact circumstances regarding the fire are currently being investigated, however it is being treated as suspicious," Victoria Police spokeswoman Natalie Webster said.
