Detention undermines UN rights council bid

The treatment of asylum seekers and refugees at Nauru and Manus Island detention centres is damaging Australia's bid for a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council, a summit of aid groups has warned.

Aid groups passed a resolution at the Australian Council for International Development conference in Melbourne on Wednesday condemning the offshore processing regime and calling for its end.

"While the Australian government maintains offshore detention, the bid for a seat on the human rights council is being undermined," said council chief executive Marc Purcell.
