The 46-year-old managed to swim to shore after seeing the torch lights of family members searching for him on a WA beach.

He'd been diving with another man at African Reef about 22.2 kilometres off the Geraldton coast on Thursday when he resurfaced and couldn't find their vessel, which was cast adrift when the anchor rope broke.

His companion managed to find the boat but the 46-year-old was stranded until the early hours of Friday, when he used the torch lights to guide him to shore, where family members found him about an hour later at about 3.20am.
