Two Melbourne men have been gnawed by the law after allegedly trying to ram their stolen car into a police vehicle.

A Keysborough man, 27, and a 34-year-old Dandenong man required medical treatment after police dogs helped in the arrest of the pair in a Cranbourne backyard early on Wednesday morning.

Both men were bitten with the Keysborough man taken to hospital where he remains under police guard.

Victoria Police accuse the pair of earlier trying to ram a stolen vehicle into a police car in Dandenong.

The 34-year-old, who was treated at the scene, is expected to face court on Wednesday on five charges including car theft, reckless conduct endangering serious injury and handling stolen goods.
