The University of Tasmania has received a research funding top-up of more than $3 million from Canberra.

The extra dollars are designed to help the uni work more closely with business and industry to better target research and training, federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham said.

"Tasmanian researchers have no shortage of smart ideas but we need to become better at taking research and applying it in ways that benefit the broader community and result in new job-creating commercial realities," he said when announcing the $3.2 million grant on Wednesday.
