A civil case launched by four teenagers who were tear-gassed at the Don Dale youth detention centre in Darwin will process to trial in September.

The boys, who cannot be named, are suing the Northern Territory government after they were shackled, spit-hooded and tear-gassed, and claim excessive force was used by officers at the centre after the event.

The case was briefly heard in the NT Supreme Court on Friday morning, and will proceed to a two-week trial from September 26.
