A driver has been charged after a truck crash in the heart of the Sydney CBD triggered traffic chaos.

The truck was travelling between the Cahill Expressway and Domain Tunnel when its trailer flipped about 1.30pm on Wednesday, spilling a huge quantity of sand.

The Sydney Harbour Tunnel reopened at 3pm, but the Cahill Expressway remained shut as the truck was towed and crews cleared away the sand, with traffic backed up to the Lane Cove Tunnel.

The 27-year-old driver who had previously been disqualified from driving until 2019, was later charged with drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, negligent driving, driver or rider state false name, fraudulently alter or use drivers licence and driver not keep work diary as required.
