Gold Coast Commonwealth Games organisers are considering using security drones to help keep athletes and spectators safe at the 2018 event.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation chairman Peter Beattie says the drones could be deployed in certain areas, including the dense bushland that surrounds some venues.

"Security planning for GC2018 is well established, however we appreciate the application of new technologies and have an open mind when it comes to their use," he said.

GOLDOC head of security Danny Bade said the organisers would make a decision about the use of drones closer to the games.

Security drones were used at the London 2012 Olympics and Mr Baade said organisers would be looking at the security arrangements put in place for the Rio Olympics.
