A man has been caught driving on a footpath in northern NSW at almost four times the legal limit.

Police say the 65-year-old was seen driving along the beachside shared bike-pedestrian path in Kingscliff about 6.30pm on Monday.

He was stopped by police after crashing into several signs and railings along the path and returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.198.

His licence was suspended and he will face Tweed Heads Court on January 9 charged with high range drink-driving.
