The first of the night's fireworks displays has dazzled families across Brisbane, as New Years Eve parties kick into full swing.

Tens of thousands have packed into South Bank in Brisbane, with the traditional 8:30pm fireworks display for families with children.

There was a simultaneous display at Hamilton further down the Brisbane River, with fireworks designer Max Brunner saying the early displays act as a preview for the main show at midnight.

"It's probably the best weather we've had in 10 years for New Years Eve, so a great night to come and party with the whole city," Mr Brunner said.

Public transport is now free right through to 5am Sunday, with the trains facing their first test of the night getting families home.

The rail system has been under pressure to perform after a string of rostering bungles, the latest of which saw a third of services cancelled with less than 24 hours notice on Christmas Day.
