An elderly woman has survived being struck by an express train in Sydney's west.

The woman, believed to be in her 70s, was on the tracks when she was hit at Granville station around 7.45am on Thursday.

She was taken to Westmead Hospital with suspected head injuries, and is in a stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

NSW police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

Train services on five of the city's main lines were delayed for several hours while police investigated.
