An electrical fault in a switchboard started a fire at a Melbourne market that destroyed shops, stalls, and Christmas presents meant for families who can't afford them.

The Little Saigon Market in Footscray caught fire shortly after 6am on Tuesday, burning the shops and social campaigner Les Twentyman's charity offices, where he stored presents and books he planned to donate at Christmas.

"MFB's fire and investigation team has found that the #footscray fire yesterday was caused by a fault in the electrical switch board," MFB acting chief fire officer Paul Stacchino said on Twitter on Wednesday.
