A prisoner on remand who escaped from Darwin Hospital is believed to be on the run with his partner and her two children, Northern Territory Police say.

Kim Thomas Riley, 27, was handcuffed when he escaped Royal Darwin Hospital on Monday evening while he was being assessed.

Police believe he was picked up by his partner, Rachel Chatfield, in a white Holden Captiva, with Western Australia registration of EMG837.

They were last seen at Elliot, more than 700km south of Darwin, driving south on the Stuart Highway, and police say Ms Chatfield's two children may be with them.

Riley is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 185cm tall, with an athletic build, short black hair and facial stubble.

Police say he is not considered to be dangerous, but members of the public are urged to not approach him but to report all sightings to Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
