The car, with a CL4RK50N number plate, appeared to have plummeted from the sky into the world famous California boardwalk, with police "caution" tape stretched around it.

It was the latest in a series of fake crashes Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May have set-up to promote their return to television this Friday.

Earlier, at Hackescher Markt in Berlin, a similar stunt was performed using a Toyota Prius with the number plate H4MM0ND.

Londoners also got a taste of the trio's organised chaos, with another Prius smashing into a red phone box in King's Cross.

The staged crashes are to promote the new show The Grand Tour, which airs on Amazon Prime this week.

It marks a return to television for the three presenters after they quit the BBC 20 months ago.

Mr Hammond, 46, told the Daily Telegraph this week there was a lot of pressure to get it right but people should not be concerned about their huge new budget, which enabled them to travel the world for scenes.

He said: "We're not going to disappoint, because we can't.

"We've got to make this good or they will come and torch us - and rightly so."

Former motoring editor of Confused.com, Amanda Stretton said: “It’s great to see the return of Clarkson, May and Hammond.

"A travelling tent of a studio means we will see a revamp of the old format which is good news for fans as elements of the old show were perhaps beginning to turn stale.

"This is the perfect opportunity to freshen things up."   © Provided by Evening Standard Limited
