A driver has been sprayed with a fire extinguisher and then attacked with a utility knife during a terrifying road rage incident in Melbourne's northwest.

The 22-year-old victim was driving in Kings Park on Monday about 10.45am when his car was rammed and forced off the road.

The attacker then approached the victim and assaulted him with the extinguisher and knife, Victoria Police said in a statement on Thursday.
