A man extradited from Tonga after being charged with the 1990 stabbing murder of Sydney woman Rita Caleo will remain in custody before his next court date.

Alani Afu, 49, appeared briefly via audio-visual link at Sydney's Central Local Court on Friday, where he is due to reappear next week.

Mrs Caleo was stabbed many times in her home in Double Bay on August 10, 1990, while her two daughters were sleeping in a nearby bedroom.

The 39-year-old's high-profile murder came almost a year after her brother Dr Michael Chye was shot dead as he drove his Mercedes-Benz into the garage of his Woollahra home in October 1989.

Two other men, who were charged following a joint-murder investigation in 2014 and 2015, remain before the courts.

NSW detectives travelled to Tonga to arrest Afu and brought him back on Thursday morning.

He has been in custody at Surry Hills Police Station and will remain behind bars before he and the two other men appear at Central Local Court on Tuesday.
