A family of five have escaped a two-storey house fire in Adelaide's south that has caused more than $280,000 in damage.

More than 20 firefighters were needed to bring the blaze at Barnabas Crescent in Christie Downs under control on Monday.

The SA Metropolitan Fire Brigade says the mother of the family is believed to have a burn to the head and all five were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Fire and police authorities are investigating the incident.
