An elderly woman has died in a house fire that investigators are no longer treating as suspicious.

The woman, in her 70s, was found unconscious and not breathing inside the burning home in Bentleigh East on Tuesday morning.

She was carried into the front yard but couldn't be resuscitated.

A second check of the house failed to find any other people inside.

A dog found at the property was taken to a local vet by a good Samaritan, the MFB said in a statement.

Locals fought the fire with garden hoses, 3AW reported.

The fire was initially deemed suspicious by the MFB but this was ruled out on Tuesday afternoon after a more thorough investigation by the police arson squad.

Roller shutters fitted to the windows of the single-storey home began melting due to the intensity of the fire, which impacted on crews' efforts to gain access to the fire.
