Marine investigators have joined local detectives on the NSW mid-north coast to examine a fatal collision between a boat and a jet ski.

A 54-year-old woman on the jet ski died at the scene at Nerong, south of Forster, on Friday afternoon.

An eight year-old boy who was also on the jet ski will have surgery for a broken leg after he was flown to John Hunter Hospital.

The boat's skipper, a male aged 46, was also flown to hospital with a broken nose and ribs.

Police say a 20-year-old man who was also on board the boat was uninjured.

Marine Area Command's Superintendent Mark Hutchings said the boat had been seized for forensic testing.

"We are mindful of the tragedy that has befallen everyone involved and what sort of affect last night's events would have had," he said.

"Specialist marine investigators have been sent to the area to work with local detectives so a report can be prepared for the coroner."
