A suspected murder victim may have lain dead near the Cairns botanic gardens for two days before his body was discovered.

The father of three was found behind a large disused tank at Edge Hill late on Tuesday afternoon.

He had been missing since 6pm on New Year's Day and was found with injuries police believe may have been inflicted by someone else.

"The circumstances are unusual, which has prompted this (murder) investigation," Detective Acting Inspector Edward Kinbacher said on Wednesday.

"So we do have concerns that there is a potential third party involved."

An associate concerned for the 56-year-old's welfare located his body behind a large tank in a quiet parking area that was effectively a dead end because of nearby roadworks, the detective added.

Investigators are unsure how long the his body had been there for but believe it may have been as long as 48 hours.

Det Acting Insp Kinbacher said the man had moved from Melbourne to Cairns about a year ago to support relatives following a death in the family.

He said the man had three children of his own and understood his wife had died.

Investigators are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the vicinity of the car park on Sunday night or the following morning.
