Australians are being urged to reconsider their movements around Jakarta on Friday amid fears extremists will use a protest by hardline Muslim groups to launch attacks.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has issued advice for travellers related to a planned protest against the city's Christian governor.

"We strongly advise you to avoid all protests and you should consider carefully your need to move about Jakarta more generally," it says on its Smartraveller website.
