A 44-year-old female prisoner died from a heart attack after being rushed to Royal Perth Hospital on the weekend, authorities have confirmed.

Judy Sonya Bolton had been on remand at Bandyup prison and was being treated at the hospital when she went into cardiac arrest on Saturday night.

Corrective Services Commissioner James McMahon expressed his condolences to her family and friends.

As with all deaths in custody, an investigation will be conducted by police on behalf of the coroner to determine the circumstances and cause of her death.
