Melburnians are heeding the advice of firefighters with fewer homes damaged by preventable fires this winter.

The MFB says the number of preventable house fires in winter has dropped 16 per cent compared to last year, coinciding with a jump in traffic to fire safety website safemistakezone.com.au.

"MFB is glad to see a reduction in the number of house fires so far this winter compared to last year, but reminds everyone to stay vigilant as there have already been fatalities this year caused by preventable house fires," said Assistant Chief Fire Officer Rob Purcell.
