An extended trailer for upcoming sequel Fifty Shades Darker has been released hinting at a plot twist absent from E.L. James' source material.

Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan both return as lead characters Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey with other returning cast members including Marcia Gay Harden, Rita Ora, Jennifer Ehle and Luke Grimes.

Surprisingly, the trailer, which features the song "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" by Zayn Malik and Taylor Swift, features a gun accompanied by a loud bang. Whether it's trickery from the trailer's editors remains to be seen although this plot twist would surprise book readers as no such moment occurs in the book.

Fifty Shades of Grey's follow-up will also see Kim Basinger, Bella Heathcote and Supergirl's Superman Tyler Hoechlin (Everybody Want Some!!) join the cast.

The film's synopsis reads:

“When a wounded Christian Grey tries to entice a cautious Ana Steele back into his life, she demands a new arrangement before she will give him another chance. As the two begin to build trust and find stability, shadowy figures from Christian’s past start to circle the couple, determined to destroy their hopes for a future together.”

Fifty Shades Darker will be released on 10 February, two years after the first adaptation which became the fastest-selling 18-certificate film of all time.

The third and final film Fifty Shades Freed will be released in 2018.
