The acting Finance department secretary has received a Christmas present from the federal government: a permanent appointment to the job.

Rosemary Huxtable will lead the department after three-and-a-half years as a deputy secretary, providing advice and managing processes for the Commonwealth Budget and economic updates.

She replaces Jane Halton, who resigned from the public service in October after two years at the helm of Finance and 12 years leading the health department.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said Ms Huxtable had done an outstanding job as the budget group's leader.

She comes to the new role with substantial experience across a range of social policy areas, particularly health, as well as in the finance portfolio.

"I very much look forward to working with Rosemary as we continue the important task of putting the Australian government budget on the strongest possible foundation and trajectory for the future," Senator Cormann said.
