A secondary college in Hobart has sustained an estimated $200,000 fire damage.

Crews raced to Elizabeth College at North Hobart about midday on Monday where they found a workshop and vehicle alight, which a staff member had tried to extinguish but couldn't due to the size of the blaze.

"His quick thinking then alerted other school staff and students of the potential dangers, allowing them to safely evacuate from the area," senior station officer Michael Goldsmith said on Tuesday, adding that the fire was accidental.
