An off-duty firefighter was one of two people killed in a light aircraft crash in central Queensland.

Jason Caswell, 37, died in the accident near the Hedlow Airfield, north of Rockhampton, on Friday.

His colleagues at Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) said they are shocked and saddened by the news.

Mr Caswell, who was married with children, was a senior firefighter who had been with the service for more than 10 years.

"Jason was a very popular young man. He was a devoted husband, father, family member, friend and firefighter," Assistant Commissioner Ewan Cayzer said.

"His contributions to QFES, his church and the communities he served over his 11-year career as a firefighter in Townsville and Rockhampton were many.

"He had a promising future within the fire service.

"Jason will be deeply missed by many."

The other person who was killed in the crash has not been named.
