The first community meeting to gauge feedback on the plan to redevelop the existing Royal Adelaide Hospital site will be held in Adelaide's botanic gardens.

The open day on Sunday on the Palm House lawns will give locals their first chance to offer opinions on the $1 billion revamp of the prime east end site.

The government's proposal includes returning more than two hectares of land to the botanic gardens, the development of an education and innovation hub, a residential precinct and a cultural and tourism quarter.

Urban Development Minister Stephen Mullighan says the plan provides a rare opportunity to transform and enhance one of the most important precincts in Adelaide.

"The vision for the site reflects years of planning, design and public consultation," he said.

"We are committed to continuing our discussions with the public throughout the master planning process as the government continues its negotiations with the preferred developer."
