Emergency crews are bracing for potential major floods in the central west of NSW as a band of wild weather sweeps across the state.

State Emergency Service crews are on high alert with heavy rains expected to hit towns including Forbes and Canowindra overnight on Friday and into Saturday.

Damaging winds are also tipped to lash the Illawarra region, NSW south coast and right across the far west of the state.

"We are urging residents to be prepared and stay indoors away from windows where possible," SES spokeswoman Terri Langendam told AAP on Friday night.

Severe thunderstorms are predicted to strike large swathes of the state's north, northwest and central west, with travellers urged to tread carefully.

"Keep out of floodwaters and consider the route you take if you do need to drive," Ms Langendam said.

"Avoid low-lying areas prone to flash flooding and avoid fallen trees and power lines in the winds."
