A former NSW Catholic priest set to be the focus of the abuse royal commission next week has been charged with nine offences.

Former Armidale priest, John Joseph Farrell, has been charged with sexual intercourse without consent and indecent assault offences.

The charges relate to alleged assaults against two boys in northern NSW, one at Gunnedah in 1975, and the other in Narrabri in 1983, police say.

The indictment was filed with the court last Friday, and the criminal case is expected to go to trial at Sydney District Court from April 10.

Investigations into the historical child sexual abuse case are continuing, police said.

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse will on Monday begin examining how Catholic dioceses in Parramatta and Armidale dealt with allegations of abuse made against Farrell.
