The chief financial officer of Fortescue Metals will leave the iron ore miner at the end of 2016.

Stephen Pearce has handed in his resignation and plans to take up a new job overseas after leading Fortescue's efforts to reduce its massive debt.

The company has also appointed Greg Lilleyman, an experienced mining sector executive with experience at Rio Tinto, as its director of operations, beginning on January 1.
