Four Australians finished in the top 10 placings as young American Justin Thomas successfully defended his US PGA Tour title in Kuala Lumpur.

A one-shot winner over Australia's Adam Scott last year, Thomas shot a closing eight-under 64 to claim a three-stroke victory from Japan's Hideki Matsuyama (66) at 23 under in the CIMB Classic on Sunday.

Cruelled by a quadruple bogey on the third hole after losing his ball in a tree, four-shot overnight leader Anirban Lahiri of India had a 72 and had to settle for a share of third with American Derek Fathauer (67).

Marc Leishman surged home with a 66, including seven birdies, to be the leading Australian in fifth place, six shots behind Thomas.

Countryman Scott Hend, the Asian tour Order of Merit leader, had a 67 to tie for seventh at 15 under.

Scott (70) and Aaron Baddeley (68) were in a seven-way tie for 10th.
