Four men have been arrested over a failed bid to evade capture by allegedly jumping from one stolen car to another in Melbourne.

Police say they tracked two men in an allegedly stolen Audi in Essendon North at 12.30 am on Friday.

The pair abandoned that car and jumped into an allegedly stolen Mazda in Preston driven by a third man.

With air wing help, that car was tracked through Montrose, Dandenong, Melbourne CBD, Keilor and Brunswick before the trio abandoned the vehicle.

They were picked up by a fourth man in an allegedly stolen Toyota Corolla, before police finally intercepted the group back in Preston after 4am.

The four - three men in their 20s and one aged 46 - were arrested.

One was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

All the cars are being forensically examined.
