A Melbourne man says a group of men beat his father with an axe and chased his mother before stealing the couple's Mercedes during a violent home invasion.

Port Melbourne man Peter Katsaros says three men kicked in the door of his family home early on Wednesday, attacked his father with the axe and turned their attention on his mother.

"(They) chased my mum around the house but, thank God, she locked herself up in the bathroom," he posted to Facebook in the hours after the attack.

"(They) smashed the walls then tried attacking me, but didn't succeed."

The trio took mobile phones and car keys before escaping in a white Mercedes with registration VAS 469, police said on Thursday.

Paramedics treated the 53-year-old man for cuts to his head after he was struck with a blunt instrument, but Mr Katsaros and his mother were not physically injured.

He expressed anger that the men who he believed to be Sudanese immigrants had run amok and messed with an innocent family.

"They make the respectful Sudanese people look bad," Mr Katsaros said in his Facebook post, as he urged people to stay safe and defend themselves.

Police released image of the stolen car and appealed for information to help solve the crime.
