GDP expected to fall for Sept quarter

Figures due out on Wednesday are expected to show Australia's economy has contracted for the first time in five years.

Economists expect the nation's gross domestic product (GDP) to have fallen 0.2 per cent in the September quarter, taking it to 2.1 per cent for the 12 months to December, according to an AAP survey of 14 economists.

The decline is being seen as likely a blip rather than the start of a recession, economists say, while even the Reserve Bank said on Tuesday that "some slowing" was likely in the economy's growth rate before it picked up again.
