Thomas Mueller has struck twice for Germany in a 3-0 victory over Czech Republic in Hamburg on a busy day of World Cup qualifying action in Europe.

Mueller, who had bagged a brace in a 3-0 win over Norway last month, put Germany ahead in the 13th minute, Toni Kroos slotted in a second early in the second half before Mueller swept in a third in the 65th on Saturday.

Germany top Group C on goal difference over Azerbaijan while the Czech Republic remain on one point following a goalless draw with Northern Ireland last month. Germany play Northern Ireland in Hanover on Tuesday.

"We could have scored more goals but basically it was a good performance from us," Mueller told RTL television.

In other qualifiers, Gareth Southgate made a solid debut as manager of England with a 2-0 win at home to minnows Malta to stay top of Group F.

England have maximum six points, which is two more than joint second teams Slovenia and Scotland.

Slovenia edged Slovakia 1-0, courtesy of a late goal from Rok Kronaveter, while Scotland battled out a late 1-1 draw at home to Lithuania with James McArthur equalising two minutes from time.

Meanwhile in Group E, Romania cruised 5-0 in Armenia, Montenegro caned Kazakhstan by the same scoreline and Poland edged Denmark 3-2 in a gripping contest thanks to a hat-trick from Robert Lewandowski.

Poland, Romania and Montenegro are joint top with four points apiece, then come Denmark on three.
