It was always bound to be politically-charged following Donald Trump's election as the next President of America, but American Music Awards 2016 co-host Gigi Hadid's impression of the next First Lady Melania Trump has shocked many.

In her opening moments with her co-host Jay Pharoah, Gigi took a swipe at Melania – complete with accent – for the scandal surrounded her RNC convention speech earlier this year when she was accused of copying Michelle Obama.

The 21-year-old model squinted her eyes and pouted after claiming to have been working hard on her impression, said: “I gotta get her face right”.

With an accent, Gigi continued: “I love my husband, President Barack Obama. And our children Sasha and Malia”.

Gigi got a few laughs from the live audience at the Microsoft Theater, but viewers at home were shocked.

“i usually like gigi but what is going on tonight... i cant claim her rn,” one fan tweeted.

“Gigi is trying too hard to be funny,” another added.

One angry Facebook user wrote: “Gigi Hadid's joke about Malaina Turmp on the American Musics Award was very classless and very tacky! (sic)”

While another furious Trump supporter added: “Listen you disgusting s***. I don't appreciate you bashing my president to be.”

A parody Melania Trump account tweeted: "Thank you Gigi Hadid for doing a spot on impression of me, i will be plagiarizing it AMAs".
